8 Meebo is a chat client for the iPhone that brings together the most popular chat services, from MSN and ICQ, to social site chat like MySpace and Facebook. Like, you'll need to sign up for a Meebo account before you get started adding your other messaging accounts. Meebo has an A-Z of almost every instant messaging service you'll have heard of, so if you have tons of accounts, the chances are you'll find them here! Once you have added the services you want, using Meebo is really easy.
Contacts are listed alphabetically, but also grouped into buddies, friends and other contacts (this depends on the services you use). With lots of accounts, it can be a bit overwhelming, but otherwise it's easy to use and looks good Meebo may be easy to use, but it is a little basic. For example, with Windows Live contacts, Meebo doesn't show status, so you can see whether people are online, but not if they are busy. Other than that, you can send images or take pictures with the iPhone and there's a good range of emoticons provided. Despite being a bit on the basic side, the usability and support for probably any messenger service you will want makes Meebo a great choice for dedicated instant message fans Changes.

Now with support for web check ins, performance enhancements, initial Twitter supported, improved Facebook support, QR-code scanning support and real-time update feed.
. Pros Lightweight Web app.
Audio/video chatting courtesy of TokBox. Pop out buddy list. Notifier utility. Cons Buddy list isn't very customizable.
No simultaneous photo sharing. No social network updates. Ads can be distracting. Bottom Line With its video calling, gaming, and pop-out buddy list, you may forget that Meebo is a Web-based application. It's a great lightweight way to get onto all your IM services, but it doesn't offer social network updates and is less customizable than installed clients.
Meebo is the poster child for browser-based applications that contain virtually zero drawbacks when compared with its installed counterparts. It now offers an installable notifier (Windows only), so its biggest missing piecedesktop notificationshas now been addressed. This multi-client instant messenger still lets you quickly message your colleagues regardless of the PC you're using, and the Flash-based web app delivers extras you'd expect only in installed software, like video-audio chat and games.
Despite these conveniences, Meebo can't do everything full-blown IM apps can, and doesn't display social network updates. Supported services include the biggiesAIM, (free, ), Facebook (support for this is called 'alpha' but I didn't see any problems with it), Windows Live Messenger, MySpace, (free, ), ICQ, and Jabber. It also includes support for many obscure services such as My YearBook, Wadja, and ObesityHelp. One notable omission is (free, ), but Meebo is far from alone in this. Meebo can remember your username but not passworda reasonable security measure.
Buddy List Normally, your Meebo buddy list lives inside of the service's Web page. The bottom of the page has ads that may rise up and play videos, which can be distracting. For a more installed-IM-app feel, Meebo lets you pop out the buddy list to a narrow standalone window, but your browser's popup blocker must be turned off for this to work. I had more luck in (free, ) with this feature than other browsers; in Chrome (free, ) and (free, ), the pop-outs didn't display correctly. If you want to corral your buddy list back into Meebo's site page, the pop-in button does just that.
The list doesn't show buddy images, but rather just the service icon for each contactthe AIM running man and Yahoo! 'Y' for example. The Editors' Choice-winning (free, ), another multi-client IM, shows both. You can't sort contacts by frequency, or reorder groups, but you can filter by name, network, and status. The search bar at the top of the buddy list lets you quickly chatter.

I like that you can begin chatting if you know a friend's username and serviceno invitation acceptance required like in the big software companies' clients. Like other IM services, Meebo's buddy list displays the name of the audio track playing on your contact's computer. When your mouse rolls over a contact entry, a popup shows status and availability, but doesn't directly offer IM or file sending the way Digsby does (you have to open the chat window to do that). A right-click lets you block, rename, IM, or remove a contact entry, or you can view his chat log or profile.
One helpful touch is that if you try to close the browser window containing Meebo, you'll get a confirmation dialogthis has saved me from closing an active IM session more than once. Customization comes in the form of advertise-y background themes (think movies, toys, clothes, sites) and a choice from ten color schemes. Your theme is synced to any PC you subsequently sign into, but you lose the color theme when you pop out the buddy list. Conversation Window Meebo's conversation window is adorned with the service icon in the upper left corner, and some fun-designed icons for info, video chat (using (free, )), chat log, file sending, and games across the top. Like the buddy list, conversation windows can also be popped out, but doing this disables video chat and gaming.
You can choose from 21 colors, 11 fonts, and nine font sizes for your textnot as massive a choice as installed IM clients, but enough to spice things up. Group chat, like most Meebo features, is simple and nicely implemented. The contact list resides in the right side panel with each name highlighted to match their entries in the main chat.
You can start an individual IM session by double clicking on a name. You do lose advanced features from the main IM window iconsgames, file uploading, and so onbut you can still pop out the window. Meebo also has public chat rooms for contacts who have signed up for Meebo accounts, and you can set up a permanent room for chosen contacts. These rooms offer more options than simple group chat by adding multimedia support. You can paste in a photo URL and look at it within the room. Unfortunately, I couldn't play YouTube videos within the chat room, which instead linked to the video page. Notifier The Meebo Notifier (currently beta) is a 1.2MB download you install and run in the background to maintain IM presence.
Once you log in with either a Meebo or other IM account, its icon sits in the system tray waiting to hear from your contacts. It not only notifies you when you have an incoming IM, but also when your contacts come on- and offline, and when e-mail arrives in accounts associated with the instant messenger services used. As its name indicates, it's not a full IM client, and though it shows you a message with the IM text at the bottom of the screen, you still have to open your browser to reply. Video, Games, Widgets, and the iPhone app Meebo gets its videoconferencing capabilities through the good graces of TokBox.
In a test videoconference, I was able to invite as many folks from my IM contacts as I wanted, but could only see and hear six chatters, after which participants got a message saying, 'Sorry, this application is full.' There were other limitations: I couldn't resize the video window, nor could I pop it out. One nice thing about videochatting in Meebo is that text IM is in same window, unlike Trillian Astra. You also can't share photos simultaneously with your buddy, as you can in AIM 7.3, Digsby, Trillian Astra, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo!
Messenger, and Trillian Astra. Online casual gaming is an unexpected bonus in Meebo. I played Bubblez with a far flung pal, and we both enjoyed it. I like how instructions appear in IM windows, but unfortunately Flash crashed at one point in the middle of a game.

Torrent microsoft expression blend 4. The Meebo Me widget lets you create an IM box for your blog or site, so that visitors can contact you immediately. You can choose a size and color for your custom widget in an easy builder interface, which generates HTML to paste into your site. Most IM clients now offer this, and Meebo's is on par.
Finally, Meebo offers an excellent iPhone client with three simple pages for Buddies, Chats, and Accounts. It uses background notification so you can do other things without missing instant messages. You can search for contacts just like in the Web version and even add new accounts from the phone. Is Meebo Right For Me? What I love about Meebo is how lightweight it is: I can go to any PC and not have to fire up an IM application to do all my communication with any service. Equally as important, I don't lose much in the way of features, including video chat, file sending, and gaming.
You do, however, lose some of the customizability of the buddy list and chat windows, along with the social network updates that you'll find in Digsby, the current king of the IM hill.
